Types of Hosting

Shared Hosting

Shared hosting is probably the most commonly used and the predominantly listed type on this site. Essentially shared hosting involves hosting multiple websites on the same physical server. The various websites will be controlled by different users.

The advantage of this is that since the the single server is shared it is cheaper to maintain.

The disadvantage is that the company who maintain the site for you will restrict what you can install and run on the site. Also you may not have very much control over what allocation of the servers resources you receive e.g. CPU and memory. In short your site site might take a while to load up because it’s resources are being used by a other users.

Server Performance

It is worth considering server performance. This can effect how quickly visitors can see your website. This is particular true when allot of server logic is required.

UNIX Servers

I’m not sure how how best to gauge a perspective servers performance but Xaprb provides a list of tools that can be used to monitor Linux servers.

Other Considerations

Web Space

Indicates the amount of disk space in MB(Mega Bytes) available to you to upload your required web files.

Ruby on Rails

‘Ruby on Rails’ is a web framework that is becoming increasingly popular for medium sized web application.

Costing

All the prices are in British pounds sterling. Any company that has quoted it’s prices in dollars have been converted to use pounds. The conversion however is based on the exchange rate at the time host was added. As a result of this some of the prices may fluctuate.

Advice

It’s better to establish your absolute minimum requirements form a hosting provider such as supported server side languages. By selecting these you should be able to cut down the selection.
